Wrencher a big chance to roll The Soldier: Hillebrand
Sat, July 10 2010
LEADING apprentice Scott Hillebrand believes Wrencher can challenge star Red Centre speedster The Soldier in today's W.A Irvine Handicap (1000m) at Fannie Bay.
Speaking after his success in the national apprentice series at Hawkesbury on Thursday, Hillebrand didn't waste words when quizzed on the six-year-old's chances.
"Wrencher's going good enough to be a real chance," Hillebrand said. "The Soldier's a top horse, particularly at 1000m, but he gives us 7kg in this race."
Wrencher, who has won nine of his 35 career starts, boasts a solid Bay record with three wins from 11 starts, two of which have come at 1000m.
The Stephen Brown-trained galloper also has the advantage of jumping from barrier three, right alongside The Soldier, who drew gate four.
The Soldier is a brilliant performer, as his career record of 15 wins from 30 starts attests, but success under a 64.5kg impost this afternoon would surely rank as his greatest achievement.
Trainer Kerry Petrick, who saddles up Palace General, wonders whether even that weight can stop Ken Rogerson's stable star.
"You could probably put a crane on his back and he would still win over 1000m," Petrick said.
Bookmaker Sportingbet also think The Soldier can get the cash, even carrying the grandstand, last night posting him a $2.50 favourite.
Regular jockey Kim Gladwin will ride The Soldier.
Victorian Barstool is the second-elect at $5.00.
Wrencher is on the third line at $6.00 in betting.
A reminder that the seven-race Day 2 program starts at 2.18pm with the feature Chief Minister's Cup (1600m) at 5.25pm.
