Cara is our Territory angel

Tue, May 03 2011

Promising hoop Cara Angel made sure the Territory race of the National Apprentice Series stayed home with an impressive victory on board Cristambul.

The Northern Territory riders had struggled so far in the series, but finally tasted success with Simone Montgomerie coming second to complete a Territory quinella.

Leading Centralian apprentice Belinda Carlile was stranded without a runner after Messi Magic was scratched in the morning, but Angel, Montgomerie and Alana Brown were left to represent.

With Alcarntspell setting a hot pace, it opened the door for a back-marker to run on and Cristambul didn't disappoint.

The Lisa Lefoe-prepared gelding worked strongly into the race, beating home Montgomerie's mount Magistrates Court with Talamagne in third.

"The horse travelled well the whole way, he pulled himself into the race and let me know when he wanted to go around them," Angel said.

"Simone (Montgomerie) won this race last year, but it's the first time a Territory jockey has won in this series.

"It's good to be able to break the drought."

The win gave Angel - indentured to Darwin trainer David Jupp - her 10th Territory victory and the 20th of her career.

The final race of the National Apprentice Series will be run at Morphettville in Adelaide later this month.
