Brown eyes double

Sat, November 05 2011

Leading Darwin trainer Stephen Brown is bidding to complete a two-state winning double today.

Brown will be in Melbourne to watch former Palmerston Sprint winner Far Horizons contest the $100,000 Emirates Airline Open Handicap, which is 1400m, at Flemington.

Then, 50 minutes later, stablemate Protesta, best remembered for his 2008 NT Derby triumph, lines up in the final race of the day at Morphettville Parks.

Brown elected to run Far Horizons in the last race of the Melbourne Cup Carnival after a third place finish in the recent Durbridge Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville.

"That was a big run from him and we've given him a shot at this race because there isn't really a race in Adelaide for him," Brown said yesterday.

"He's a good, honest horse who just keeps doing a great job for us."

Having come so close to tasting a maiden Flemington success on Thursday with Canali, not to mention the eye-catching effort by Emboldened, Brown is more hopeful than confident Far Horizons can salute.

Far Horizons was last night rated a $35 chance with TattsBet and will be ridden by Steven Arnold.

South Australian speedster Stirling Grove is the $3.85 favourite.

In Adelaide, Paul Denton will partner Brown's Protesta in the $34,000 Parmalat Handicap (1250m).

The seven-year-old hasn't been sighted since his runner-up effort behind Academy Magic on Darwin Cup Day. Protesta was last night rated a $12 chance with TattsBet, with The Eighth Maker the $2.60 favourite.

Meanwhile, a former Brown galloper in Stalingrad is first emergency for today's $80,000 Ascot Gold Cup (1800m) in Perth.

Now with Kellie Kersley, Stalingrad posted two of his three wins under Brown.
