Blackbriar continues to rise

Sun, April 03 2011

Blackbriar showed his star continues to rise after he put in a dominant performance for his third consecutive victory at Pioneer Park yesterday.

Racing in the Red Centre for the first time, the St Patrick's Day Cup winner kept his terrific Territory form going in the XXXX Gold Weight For Age (1400m).

Ridden to perfection by Paul Shiers, Blackbriar sat one out and one back in the run and was just cruising along approaching the turn.

Shiers asked for an effort on entering the straight and Blackbriar extended to chase down NT Derby runner-up Faster Buster in the last 100m, with He's Here coming third.

It was a strong showing from the $2.10 favourite, who has now won all three starts since coming to the NT and gives trainer Melinda Boothby plenty of options when she weighs up his next target.

The win completed a double for the Darwin-based Boothby-Shiers combination, which had tasted success with Just Rory earlier in the day.

Michael Evans also collected a double, training Rainy Knight to victory while riding home Rush On Wine for Terry Huish in the two-year-old event.

The Ted Wade-trained Cullenary Delight recorded her seventh win from nine starts at Pioneer Park.

Pontoon Flyer was the other winner on the six-race card, winning the Class B Hcp.
