Bates has top double

Sat, March 19 2011

David Bates only has two runners at Fannie Bay today, but they both create plenty of interest.

Tan Tat Jet was nothing short of impressive in his Top End debut last month while Rogue Warrior, a new addition to the stable, had some good form in Sydney.

The pair head the list of chances in the $15,000 Sportingbet Hcp (1200m), the feature event on the card.

Formerly trained by Peter Moody in Victoria, Tan Tat Jet was dominant in his first look at the 'Bay.

Despite being slowly away, Brendon Davis settled the six-year-old gelding into a rhythm, before working around the field on the turn and running away to record a three and three-quarter length win over Far Horizon, one of his opponents today.

"He's in very good order and I expect him to run accordingly," Bates said.

"He'll go for a break after this. He's had a prep in Melbourne, a trip up here and two starts in nine weeks, so we'll give him a spell before bringing him back for the carnival." Rogue Warrior has come to Darwin from NSW, via Adelaide, but has settled in well, running second in a barrier trial last month.

To be ridden by Colin Haddon, the Choisir gelding was stakes-placed as a two-year-old, with two of his three wins coming in the city.

"He has some very nice form but the 1200m probably doesn't suit him at the moment," Bates said.

"But I think he'll go forward and run a cheeky race."

"His last preparation in Sydney was probably his worst, so we just want to see what we've got."

Bates is keeping things low-key while he gets his team ready for the Darwin Cup carnival.

"It's pretty quiet at the moment," he said.

We're still buying horses, but we just want to give the rest of the stable a break."

"We haven't got any horses entered for Alice Springs, so all the focus is on getting them ready for the carnival."
