Anything goes in Adelaide adventure

Fri, December 09 2011

Darwin trainer Gary Clarke says anything will be a bonus from his Adelaide adventure with impressive mare Dream Face.

The four-year-old, who has strung together six consecutive wins at Fannie Bay, has headed down the Stuart Highway for what Clarke knows is a shot at the stumps in tomorrow's Holdfast Insurance Handicap (1050m) at Morphettville.

"She was always going for a spell down here, but we decided to give her a shot in Adelaide after performing so well at home," Clarke said.

"The plan was to run her in the fillies and mares sprint last week, but the truck couldn't get down here in time, so this is the one.

"It's a cracker of a field with the likes of Happy Glen (a winner of $409,900 in prizemoney) and Obsidian Dragon ... I'd be happy if she ran in the first four."

Clarke has nothing but admiration for the daughter of Face Value, who not only has plenty of toe but a cast-iron constitution, as evidenced by her campaign since arriving in the Top End.

"She has had 12 starts this preparation and been up from April to November," Clarke said.

"She arrived down with Tamara (Oxlade) about 10 days ago and Tamara said she's handled the trip well."

Clarke has pulled something of a masterstroke by engaging the current leader of the Adelaide apprentice premiership, Nathan Rose, to ride Dream Face.

"I got on to Nathan pretty quick because I knew a number of the top weights in the race would be keen to grab apprentices," he said.

Rose will claim 1.5kg, meaning that Dream Face carries 52.5kg, half a kilogram under the minimum weight.

Clarke arrived in Adelaide yesterday to oversee the final 48 hours of Dream Face's build-up and admitted he will have one eye on the television with three runners at Fannie Bay tomorrow.

He rates Out of the Desert (Brendon Davis), contesting the feature Sportingbet Handicap (1300m), as the best of his trio.
